Fooled by the Pumpkin Dip

Every autumn I have pumpkin dip. Either I make it or my mom does or my sister does. It is a fall tradition. It has been around the family forever. Pumpkin dip has been a part of my fam for so long that I thought (up until last weekend) that my family invented pumpkin dip. We have the pumpkin serving dishes to prove it.

So last weekend, or was it the weekend before? I am not quite sure. Anyway, we were invited to the Robert's house for dinner and I was asked to bring dessert. Well, as we all know, I am NOT a baker. I am a savory cook. I did accept the dessert challenge with much trepidation and scoured my books and blogs for a fool-proof idea. I wanted a recipe that didn't require precise measuring or much detailed work. I am not good at those things. As the fall breeze was creeping into my kitchen, it dawned on me. Perfect. I will make the Pilla Family Pumpkin Dip. It's a Classic. So easy. So delish.

Off to the pantry I went to grab confectioners sugar (1 cup) and a can of pumpkin, then I stopped by the fridge for some whipped cream cheese (12 oz).

To whip up the dip, simply add it all to the mixer and whip.

Serve chilled with vanilla wafers, ginger snaps or graham crackers.

Off we go to dinner. It was delish. Grilled lamb, cous cous, green beans, everything was so good. As dessert time was drawing near, I was excited for the light and sweet pumpkin dip. It isn't heavy, it is the perfect palette cleanser.

As we began to eat dessert, Mary, the hostess says, oh, I have had this before, in fact I make it every Thanksgiving. I am stunned. What? This is a Pilla Family Secret Recipe, isn't? What do you mean that you have this recipe? It can't possibly be. My mom, the great cook that she is, invented this recipe. Then, before I know it, Mary whips out a 3-ringed binder, without hesitation she turns right to the page where MY MOM'S PUMPKIN DIP recipe is staring back at me. Right there, cut out from a magazine. Tragic.

All this time I thought my mom created this recipe. Oh well. It doesn't really matter. It is a wonderful tradition. It is a simple recipe and it is really good. Perfect for an after school snack or a dessert following a fancy lamb dinner.

That happens to me all the time. It makes me wonder if any of us ever have an original idea in the kitchen. This looks so yummy-can't wait to try it.
