So fast forward a few years and I came across a recipe called "The Sophisto Joe" a jazzed up version of the classic sandwich. I gave it a try and it was pretty good, I have made a few tweaks and now it is a regular on our supper menu. I serve it with a crisp iceburg salad and some frozen fries and have it all pulled together in about 30 minutes.
INGREDIENTS
1 package lean hamburger meat
1 14 oz can of chopped tomatoes
1 bell pepper diced
1 small onion diced
3 cloves garlic minced
1T chili pepper
1t cumin
2T worcestshire sauce
2 heaping Tablespoons of brown sugar
Hamburger Buns
In a large saute pan, heat a bit of olive oil
Add the onion, pepper, garlic and cook until the veggies begin to soften (3-5 min)
Add the meat and break into small pieces with a large spoon
Add the cumin and chili powder
Once the meat begins to brown, add the tomatoes, worcestshire, and brown sugar
Allow the flavors to merry and for the sauce to thicken, about 5 minutes
Pile the yummy filling into the buns and you are ready to go!

We just made these, and they were great! The tamale pie is also on tap for a meal this week...I'm sure that will be delicious also.
